Each day, a student in our classroom is assigned to be the Gossiping Gorilla.  His or her job is to write a short article about what took place in class that day.  Using a computer at home or one of the classroom's laptops, students type their articles and turn them in to Mrs. Edgar via e-mail or flash drive.  This way, students get an opportunity to write using technology, and Mrs. Edgar can easily upload the articles to The Native News.  This web page is updated daily, so be sure to check back often to read about life in fifth grade!

August

August 20-22, 2008
Written by Mrs. Edgar

Finally, the awaited day has arrived and the students are all present and eager to start the school year. I met the students in the gym at 7:50 A.M. to greet them their first day in fifth grade. After the pledge and announcements from the administrator, Mrs. Guile, the students and I headed to class to begin our day. Students had a student survey to work on as we began our day.

Throughout the first day I shared a PowerPoint I had created to introduce students to fifth grade. I introduced myself and gave information about my family and my pup Corky. Students hared information about themselves as well throughout the day. For the remainder of the week, we reviewed expectations and worked on some community building activities.

We discussed our classroom mini-economy also this week. Students will be assigned classroom jobs to complete for a set salary. We took the time to complete job applications and make class officer posters for class elections next week. This style of classroom management helps build community and a sense of responsibility for the students.

I also took the time today to walk the students through our class website. I took the time to discuss specific pages for the students’ use, as I have links for parents, teachers, and the community as well. I also discussed the importance of the students returning their signed permission slip for web publishing.

Students started working on their first social studies unit which covers geography. We will continue to learn basic geography be before moving into a science unit in September.

The last business of each day was student agendas. Students added their assignments to return forms on their agendas before I initialed for each day. We discussed agenda expectations once more before packing up each day. While we waited for buses, we did some Brain Quest trivia.
